What Can a Nurse Practitioner Do?
1. Diagnosis and Treatment:
Nurse Practitioners can assess patients, diagnose illnesses, and develop treatment plans for both acute and chronic conditions. They manage infections, injuries, and other health issues. Nurse practitioners may also admit and discharge from health services, including hospital settings.
2. Prescribe Medications:
Nurse Practitioners have the authority to prescribe medications, including some controlled substances, without the need for physician supervision.
3. Patient Education and Counselling:
Nurse Practitioners provide education to patients about their health conditions, treatment options, and preventive care strategies, promoting overall wellness.
4. Order and Interpret Tests:
Nurse practitioners can refer patients for diagnostic tests such blood tests, x-rays and ultra-sounds. Nurse practitioners can communicate results of some tests and refer patients to other health professionals for review.
5. Collaboration with Healthcare Teams:
Nurse practitioners work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, specialists, and allied health staff, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
What Can’t a Nurse Practitioner Do?
While Nurse Practitioners can perform many things that a general practitioner doctor can do, there are some things that are not within their scope of practice.
- Some tests such as MRIs must be referred by a doctor or specialist.
- Some restricted medications must be initially prescribed by a doctor or specialist.
Please note places like Centrelink, Workcover, TAC and VicRoads don't accept letters regarding capacity, leave certificate etc from Nurse Practitioners at this stage.
